About Joseph Sherman
Co-founder and President of The Reliant Group, Joseph Sherman began his career after completing his postsecondary and graduate education. An alumnus of Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, he earned a Bachelor of Arts in History with Dean’s List and magna cum laude honors. In 1981, Joseph Sherman completed the Juris Doctorate program at Georgetown University Law Center, in Washington, D.C., where he was also a member of the Georgetown University International Law Journal.
Joseph Sherman practiced law in Washington, D.C. with Lane & Edson, P.C., the nation's premier affordable housing law firm, before it merged with Nixon Peabody. In 1993, Joseph Sherman founded The Reliant Group, an investment firm that focused on real estate value creation investment strategies for its clients. From 1993 through 1997, The Relaint Group, under the leadership of Joseph Sherman, was a partner with the Resolution Trust Corporation ("RTC"). The venture with the RTC acquired $750 million of sub-performing and non-performing loans from failed savings and loans, which were restructured or liquidated by The Reliant Group. By the late 1990's Joseph Sherman began to focus on redevelopment opportunities in the City of San Francisco, creating hundreds of thousands of square feet of office from warehouse space, developing retail in areas with urban blight and launching several hotel repositioning/redevelopment projects. In 1999, Joseph Sherman acquired a bond financed high rise multifamily property, which he used as the launch vehicle to take The Reliant Group into both market rate and affordable multifamily housing. Today, Joseph Sherman and his team at The Reliant Group have acquired or developed over $550 million of multifamily properties nationwide. As President of The Reliant Group, Joseph Sherman oversees all global and day-to-day operations within the company. He is directly responsible for capital formation, including the firm's proprietary discretionary investment funds, called the Capital Accelerator Program.
